About Special Education

Special education is planned instruction specifically designed to address the educational and related developmental needs of children with disabilities. This includes Early Intervention Services and services for school-age children in grades k-12.

The Manheim Township School District’s Special Education department has Services and Programs available to meet the needs of exceptional students as determined by the Individual Education Program (IEP) teams. The Special Education Department provides programs and services in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and PA Chapter 14 Special Education Services Programs. Services are provided according to the educational needs of the child, not the category of disability. Related services are designed to enable the child to participate in or access his or her program of special education. Examples of related services are speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing services, vision services, audiological services, and family training. The District’s goal is to educate each student in the least restrictive environment with the supports and services necessary to ensure the success of the student.
