FUN TIMES AT REIDENBAUGH

Each month we will take a look at all of the fun things our “Hoppers” are doing at Reidenbaugh. This month our 2nd graders visited the STEAM Lab to complete their first STEAM activity of the year: “Building A Caterpillar House!”  Before heading to the lab, they read: The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires.  In the story, the main character learns that making “the most magnificent thing” turns out to be harder than she thinks.

Each student needed to be able to solve the following problem: Design a Caterpillar Chrysalis.  Students were given the following directions:

  • The caterpillar must fit completely inside the chrysalis.
  • There must be a roof, a floor and a door for your caterpillar

Students had the following “free” materials to design their chrysalis:

  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • 18″ of masking tape
  • 1 caterpillar.

Students had an additional $0.99 to purchase the following:

  • toilet paper tube(s)
  • cotton ball(s)
  • toothpick(s)
  • paper
  • Kleenex,
  • 6″ masking tape

Our second graders put their “GRIT” to the test as they worked collaboratively, problem solved, and worked creatively!  Attached are pictures of our 2nd graders working hard on the project and pictures with their finished projects.

STEM Club

We have an exciting learning opportunity being offered here at Reidenbaugh starting in October on Thursdays from 3:45PM-5: 15PM. Students can participate in a STEM Lab offered by Sylvan Learning Center for $99 a month. Every month that your “Hopper” participates they will get to experience theme based challenges that will allow them to use their imagination and problem solving skills in a fun and enjoyable way. Every month will be a new theme and a new challenge. If this sounds like something your child would like to be a part of please contact Elizabeth Clippinger, Sylvan Learning Center Director, by email at Elizabeth@sylvanpa.com or by phone at 717-293-0300.
