Elementary EXCEL provides a pull out enrichment program for identified students. Students typically meet with the EXCEL teacher for approximately an hour and a half each week. Activities are designed to explore themes in depth, work on independent projects, practice higher order thinking skills, and discuss affective issues. EXCEL also provides support services for use in the regular education program, acceleration in appropriate areas and extra-curricular extension activities. Gifted middle school students with an active GIEP have Gifted Support scheduled in lieu of Reading class. Gifted Support class is designed to extend the Regular Education classroom curriculum by increasing the depth and breadth of the Regular Education curriculum. Gifted Support provides opportunities for students to construct and use their knowledge effectively and imaginatively through various hands-on explorations while being appropriately grouped with their intellectual peers. The program will utilize differentiated instruction by being tailored to student strengths, needs, interests and learning styles. Additional opportunities available to Gifted Support students include clubs, contests, competitions, independent study, and special activities such as seminars and field trips. Gifted Support also provides support services for use in the Regular Education program, acceleration in appropriate areas, and extra-curricular extension activities. Students at the high school have the opportunity to include gifted services within their academic schedules. The high school gifted room is a “safe haven” from busy high school academic life. The high school facilitators serve as advocates and offer seminars, competitions, and opportunities to discuss students’ strengths and needs including goals, college planning, career exploration and independent studies. Gifted students at the high school may also take advantage of numerous Honors and AP courses. Manheim Township’s Gifted Support Department |
